We can't run on Public Footpaths?

General chit-chat and banter...

We can't run on Public Footpaths?

Postby JSW on Thu May 22, 2008 9:45 pm

Just to let you all know. A number of our runners were stopped on Washbrook Lane by the 'landowner' on Wed night who stated that they were not allowed to run on public footpaths, they are for walkers only. I have done some 'digging' and the law states that public footpaths are for pedestrians only (Does this include runners?). I have therefore emailed the public rights of way officer to get some clarification on whether people can run on public footpaths. Watch this space!

will be interesting to hear what you find out as we quite often use cross-country routes through out the summer as a scenic alternative

Just had a reply from the public rights of way officer. A public footpath is a highway in law therefore we can run on them just as we can run on a pavement or road. Advice is to not run more than two abreast and to slow down around 'farmyard occupants'. Otherwise we have every right to be running on a public footpath!
